My Mother's Rule

"When the snow is off the mountain"
my summer can begin.

Scratchy shrinking tights
with waning crotch
and strained elastic waist
thinning heels and worn toe seams
twist inside my boots and shoes

no longer new and smooth
beneath my pleated tunic
each leg is marred
by tomboy snags
and weekly washer pilling.

When the snowy mask melts off the mountain
I'll shed my winter skin.
