Kevin Gillam is a West Australian poet with poems published in numerous
Australian and overseas journals. He has had two books of poems published,
both by SunLine Press, Other Gravities in 2003 and permitted
to fall in 2007. He works as a secondary school music teacher,
free-lance 'cellist and conductor, and is married with two step-children.

butterflies aren't moths
nearly black.
black rather than blue.
blue uncontrollably.
uncontrollably blue, yes, but redder too,
to mauve, though not purple,
nothing rhymes with purple.
purple was the colour of
my 70's childhood, that,
and burnt orange.
orange eyes on the wings of brown butterflies.
butterflies aren't moths.
moths, soft desperation, knotting
streetlights with satin wings.
wing dust on my fingers, black, nearly
