Monday's Poem

© 2013 Pasquale Verdicchio

Pasquale Verdicchio is a founding member of the Italian Canadian Writers Association. His books of poems include This Nothing's Place (Winner of the 2010 Bersani Prize) and Approaches to Absence, both published by Guernica Editions. Way back he studied with P.K. Page and Robyn Skelton at UVic. As a translator he has published works by P. P. Pasolini, Alda Merini, and Andrea Zanzotto among others. He teaches literature, film, and writing at the University of California, San Diego, traveling north to British Columbia every summer to dip his toes (and only his toes) in the waters of Savary Island.

"Ludwig's Raisins" is from This Nothing's Place (Guernica, 2008)

Ludwig's Raisins

A cake
A cake is good
With raisins
Raisins might be
The best there is
Of a cake
But a bunch
Of raisins
Is not
Always better
Than a cake
Might be and
If you were
To give me
A bunch of raisins
Would it mean
I could
No I could not
Bake a cake nor
For that matter
Make
Something better.
