Those Astonishments of Sorrow, of Joy

A Poetry Chapbook by Wendy Donowa

What gravity pulls
open the senses’ trap doors,
impels perceptions to the wordless deep?
What clutches those reverberations,
draws them up
to the thin air of the knowable?

Intention does not have the final say.

from “Smell of Apples, of Hay”

After three decades in Barbados as teacher, artist and museum curator, Wendy Donawa now lives and writes in Victoria. Her poems have appeared in Caribbean and Canadian journals, in four chapbooks edited by Patrick Lane, online as Leaf Press’s Monday’s Poem, and in the anthologies Walk Myself Home (Caitlin Press, 2010), Open Heart 5 (Ontario Poetry Society, 2011), and The Wild Weathers: A Gathering of Love Poems (Leaf Press, 2012).

Her first chapbook, Sliding Towards Equinox, appeared in 2009 (Rubicon Press). She has co-authored, with Leah Fowler, Reading Canada, a survey of Canadian literature for young adults, forthcoming early in 2013 with Oxford University Press. Please see also www.wendydonawa.ca.
