Matchbook Night

Lindsey Weishar

Matchbook Night was the winner in the International Category in the Overleaf Chapbook Manuscript Competition for 2017.

Lindsey Weishar's poems chronicle her sojourn in Sicily, where she lived with a family of four. Her chapbook was printed on recycled papers ... small flecks are quite visible in them, like ashes from the volcano. The endpapers are translucent blue for the night sky. We printed Lindsey's photograph of Etna on glossy photo paper and attached it to the front cover. The chapbook is hand stiched.

An excerpt from "Mango Gelato"

We want to expose our children to the world, to travel.

We do not want you to give us fifteen hours
of English tutoring a week, but only to talk with us. ...

I wake to mornings unscheduled.
Each afternoon we rest when the heat is heaviest.
For a month, I am theirs. Over a spoonful
of mango gelato, I abandon all my "shoulds."

Lindsey Weishar is an MFA candidate in Poetry at the University of Missouri, Kansas City, and an instructor of Composition. She is a contributor to Verily Magazine; her poetry has also appeared in Dove Tales, An International Journal of the Arts, Steam Ticket, and Kansas City Voices.
